Travelling with....Tarantulas🚙
How does one travel with their hairy babies on the road in South Africa ?
Here are some tips you can follow.
1. Never Keep Your Spiders In a Hot or Cold Vehicle For More Than 10 Minutes . Vehicles get way too hot or to cold quickly. Heat Is Deadly To Tarantulas.
a) If you are travelling in summer , park in a shaded area , but do not leave them too long in the vehicle when the air condition is not running.
2. Keep Them Away From Direct Sunlight. Cover them with something to prevent direct sunlight shining on them , even if they are in a box. Remember that as you travel , sunlight changes direction and will come through various windows of your car throughout your journey.
3. Do Not Load Your Babies Into Your Trunk. Heating and air conditioning do not reach your trunk area easily , and the trunk area heats up much quicker than inside your car.

4. Keep Them Away From Any Air Vents.
a) Many vehicles have air vents under the seats , so putting the box under the seat will likely put them in the way of airflow. Even if they are in a box , it is not a good idea to have them close to an air vent.
b) If you are travelling in a Van or SUV , please bear in mind these vehicles have many air vent locations.
5. Thermometers : The reptile industry have many cordless thermometers where you can purchase one as part of your travelling equipment to safely transport your 8 legged babies.
6. Travelling Long Distance : Do not be afraid to take your spiders with you wether you are staying in a hotel , guesthouse or by a friend or family member. We certainly wouldn't advertise to them that you have spiders with you , might end up sleeping in your car.

7. If you are travelling with only a few spiderlings , it is easy for you to take them with you during restroom breaks , or eating out at a diner , while on your journey. You can place them in a bag with handles (be sure to pack them sturdy so they don't fall around).
8. Consider using a Insulated Cooler or Insulated box to encase your spider while you travel. Doing so will help protect your spiders from sudden temperature shocks.
9. Ensure All Lids Are Secure . Masking tape and box tape works well to keep your babies in their enclosures.
10. Place your spiderlings in a secure location , If You Have To Put The Brakes On Quickly.
11. If your journey is longer than a few hours , you might want to consider travelling with tongs , catch cup and a spray bottle.
